Overcoming Problems

By: Elif Unal

Students from the low income areas receive poorer education then the ones that are from the high income areas. Education sadly depends on the money that the school, the student and the family have.

Our schools are funded with property taxes. When the property taxes are higher, the more schools get funded and the more students benefit from it. This is great news for the people living around high income areas but if you’re a student from a low income area, the education you’re going to get will be worse than the others. What we need is equality in education. The area you come from shouldn’t matter. That's why our government needs to come up with a better way to fund schools.

Teachers are one of the most important factors when it comes to education. When a low income school is trying to hire a new teacher, they don’t interview the teacher as much as they do in a high income school. Low income schools don’t familiarize the teachers with the school processes and the teaching standards. Teachers don’t get the assistance they need in the areas of hiring, mentoring, and curriculum. The development of the teachers directly affects the success of the students. The schools need to support the teachers so that they will have the motivation to encourage their students. With more motivated teachers, students will believe that they can become successful just like other students at high income schools and they will try harder to achieve more than they believe they can.

Every student has the right to get a good education. When our education depends on the money we have, we can’t have the successful and the powerful future that we want for ourselves, our children and our country.
